Repairing your credit

So you have bad credit. That doesn't mean that your credit history is forever shot. Believe it or not, with your student loan, you have the opportunity to repair your credit. It's just going to take some time and quite a bit of effort to make this possible. You can make this happen however if you consistently make your payments on time and in full. Lending institutions will also be able to provide you with credit counseling in order for you to get advice on your loans.

It's not easy living with bad credit. For one thing, banks will be more wary of approving your applications for loans, and this will be really troublesome if you're determined to pursue higher education. In such cases, you might want to explore federal student loan options first. That will give you a stronger chance of being able to pay for your college education.

Getting a co-signer

As someone with bad credit, you probably think that you have blown your chance of getting a college education because you won't be able to qualify for any loans. There is no need for you to despair yet; all you have to do is turn away from private lending institutions and look for other alternatives. There are federal student loan programs out there who don't require a credit history or a credit check for its applicants. Or you can even have a cosigner for the loan, so long as he or she has a good credit history. You may even be able to find private banks who would still be willing to grant you a loan, although more likely one with a higher interest rate. It will be quite a challenge, but if you can manage to score a decent loan for your college education, then the legwork is worth it.

Can you get student loans with bad credit?

Bad credit is the bane of absolutely anyone who is trying to obtain a loan, and people trying to get a student loan are faced with the same problem. If you are applying for a private loan, you will either need to have a good credit line or a cosignor with a good credit history; otherwise, you have very little hope of making this happen. But not all is lost for the loan applicant with bad credit. You can always turn to federal loans for help. Federal loans, such as the Stafford student loan, are perfect for the student with poor or no credit. The subsidized and unsubsidized versions of the loan are available to everybody. Don't forget to check any grants or scholarships that don't require any credit checks; you may be missing out on these. Bad credit is not necessarily a hindrance for anyone who wants an opportunity to pay for a college education; a little research is all it takes.
